| A new colleague told me a girl she knows had just left for Phd. Degree in the USA. It seems to my colleague that the girl is ambitous enough and not always satisfied with her enviable achievements. Then she mentioned a lot more about the girl. When I heard her name, I realized she used to be one of my colleagues and had long dreamed of studying in the USA, which seemed to others fanciful, simply because her insolent boyfriend was there. Anyway, she pretended to be everyone else. I could hear such news now and then. Actually we were SAME, but are going to be different very soon. I need to reconsider who I am and try not to be who I am. |
| The look into the mirror reminds me of a story. I used to work in Foshan as an international businessman. Soon after I arrived there, one of the villagers told me the local men are not so good in looking as outsiders. One day, I went to the downtown area just to find very few handsome faces. Then I went to an exclusive clothes store and was rather attracted by a young man who looked really smart. To my surprise, he waved back and smiled to me as I waved and smiled to him. So I decided to go forward and speak to him. | I received a call after I woke up from the afternoon siesta. It was an invitation to a birthday party at 11:30 am tomorrow. Two friends were born in different years but their birth dates were close, therefore they decided to hold the party on the same day, which means I need to get up early tomorrow and prepare two gifts. I am wondering what the party will be like and what gifts are unexpectable to them. Also the things should be neither too expensive nor of much difference in value. They should have told me earlier. You know, it is not always easy to find those things. Anyway, they asked me to come not for what I take, but for what I mean to them. |
| I overslept in the morning and was 20 minutes’ later for class. The unsupervised students were reading aloud when I arrived. Feeling guilty, I started the course as soon as I got my breath. Unlike other classes I teach, there are a lot more boys than girls in this one and all of the boys seem to be very active and cooperative. Then the course went on smoothly, I tried all means to make English grammar funny and understandable, which turned out to be effective. I made up a half an hour’s compensation after the course should have ended as scheduled. I promised to myself not to late next time. |
| Should criminals be sent to a jail or let them do something else as punishment instead of sending into a jail Why and give your reasons. There has long been controversy concerning the objectives of the justice system. Sending criminals to a prison seems to be a justified punishment for damages inflicted to victims or society. But currently an increasing number of people goes with the option that criminals should be given appropriate amount of community services as a substitute of correction measures. Traditionally courts sentence law violators to serve a period of time in a prison or, under some circumstances, a correction institution if the offenders are minors or the charges are not serious. Criminals, after serving their time, are discharged back to the street. Ironically many of them end up becoming victims of the law itself. For example, a forty years old man served 10 years in prison for intentional injury. Released from jail, he found himself having great trouble in making a living because he lacked new skills and knowledge for work. No place wanted him for fear of possible future wrongdoings because of his criminal record. In many cases, ex-criminals become outcasts of community and are forced to commit other crimes for revenge or other reasons. On the contrary, criminals could be changed into contributing members of the society again if given a second chance. In such circumstances, they perform public services under supervision making a meager but honest living. This not only cuts the expenses of keeping them in jails such as food, cloth, and numerous other costs, but also warns would-be law offenders the consequences for illegal actions. This is particularly effective for minor criminals who stand a greater chance of achieving the corrective aims. Yet it is no easy job to draw a fine line between those who should be given a lighter punishment and those who should be more heavily published due the nature of law under complex circumstances. Nevertheless, we should encourage more effective ways of law enforcement to protect law-abiding citizens and, at the same time, deter and punish violators at any level so that criminals would not take advantage of lighter punishments. To sum up, either sending criminals to a prison or giving them community work as another form of punishment has merits for different reasons. But we need to be clear of the goals of law and choose more effective ways of law enforcement. |
| One midnight, a housewife and a policeman waited for a taxi behind a tree near a supermarket. Suddenly, a drunkard staggered across the street towards them, carrying a red rose and saying “you are the most beautiful lady in the world.’’ Hearing it, the housewife was thrilled and ecstatic. | Many everyday American expressions are based on colors. Red is a hot color. Americans often use it to express heat. They may say they are red hot about something unfair. That means they are very angry about something. Fast loud music is popular with many people, and they may say the music is red hot. Pink is a lighter kind of red. People sometimes say they are in the pink when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the 20th century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink color that shows that they are in good health. Blue is a cool color. The traditional blues music in the United States is the opposite of red hot music. Blues is slow, sad and soulful. There is a famous song Mood Indigo about the deep blue color, indigo. In the words of the song: “You ain’t (haven’t) been blue till you’ve had that Mood Indigo.” Someone who is blue is very sad. The color green is natural for trees and grass. But it is an unnatural color for humans. A person who has a sick feeling stomach may say she feels a little green. A passenger on a boat who is feeling very sick from high waves may look very green. Sometimes a person may be upset because he does not have something as nice as a friend has, such as a fast new car. That person may say he is green with envy. Some people are green with envy because a friend has more dollars or greenbacks. Dollars are called greenbacks because that is the color of the back side of the paper money. The color black is used often in expressions. People describe a day in which everything goes wrong as a black day. The date of a major tragedy is often remembered as a black day. Black-outs are common during World War Two. All lights in a city would be turned off officially to make it difficult for enemy planes to find a target in the dark of night. |
