Bike lanes are smaller versions of the lanes cars drive in. The lanes are painted onto the roads by local highway departments to enable a buffer zone for bicycle travel. Cars are allowed to enter the bike lanes, but bikers have the right of way in these lanes. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish how to best be safe in a bike lane. Here is your guide. Step 1 Use the bike lane. This may seem like an obvious step, but most bike / car accidents occur when cyclists are not in the bike lane. Ride between the dividing lane and the curb or side of the road. Avoid the use of sidewalks.Step 2 Ride in the bike lane with the flow of traffic. Walk against traffic and ride with traffic. Look at the car to your left and go the same direction as the car. If the car is going north, go north. If the car is going west, ride west. Don't ride against traffic. Step 3 Know the law and follow it so you'll understand how to correctly yield to cars and pedestrians when they have the right of way. Went there is a green light go. When you have a red light stop. When cars are turning on a green arrow, yield to the car. If a pedestrian has a walk sign, stay out of the person's way. Step 4 Wear a helmet. Choose a helmet that you will wear and that fits your head correctly. Go to a sporting goods store to be fitted for the best helmet. Strap the helmet on correctly each time, fully fastening it snugly. Sit the helmet flat on your head. It should not tilt forward or backward. Step 5 Wear reflective items and install some on your bike. Purchase a reflective vest or cycling outfit from a local cycling store. Wear the reflectors whenever you go out and especially at night. Attach lights to the bike and turn them on in dark and inclement weather. |
| When you go to buy a bike, you will find that you have a choice between mountain bikes, road bikes or hybrids. But which bike makes the most sense for you? Step 1 Decide what you want to do with the bike. Where do you want to ride? How often? Is comfort a top priority, or is performance more important?Step 2 Buy a mountain bike if you want to ride off road. Mountain bikes also make great city bikes. If you don't plan to ride off road, simply switch to smoother tires. Step 3 Buy a road bike if you want to go fast, and if you only ride on the pavement. Road bikes are light and efficient, but people who don't ride very often generally find them uncomfortable. Step 4 Buy a hybrid if you want the upright, comfortable riding position of a mountain bike, and the efficiency of a road bike. Hybrids are great for city riding, commuting, and light trail riding. Step 5 Consider a one-speed cruiser for a quality low-cost, low-maintenance bike. Cruisers are great for running errands and getting around a college campus. But watch out for long hills! |
| Road biking in the snow can be rather wearing on both you and the bike. You may want to consider purchasing a road bike that is manufactured specifically for riding in the snow. You also need to take into consideration how much snow is on the road and what kind of gear you'll wear. Step 1 Choose a bike that you don't mind getting ruined. Even when you're careful, your bike's drivetrain can go through torture when riding in the snow. Put fenders on your bike so snow won't be thrown up onto your butt. You might also want to install a bike rack to keep the snow away from you. Nothing is worse than having a wet butt while riding in the snow.Step 2 Check out your road conditions. Determine whether you'll be riding on water, ice or snow. This helps you decide what kind of tires you should use for your ride. Step 3 Install thicker tires on your bike for the inclement conditions. Thicker tires grab the snow better and do not cause you to slide as easily. Consider putting chains on your bike if the roads are particularly icy. The chains help you gain traction so you don't slide. Step 4 Lower your tire pressure when riding an electric bike in the snow. Lowering your tire pressure by about 10 pounds can help you obtain better traction. Step 5 Prepare your brakes and chain. Lubricate your chain well so it moves freely and doesn't lock up. Disk brakes are the best type of brakes for road bikes in the snow. These brakes are expensive, but worth it, if you're planning on doing a substantial amount of road biking in the snow. If you have pad brakes, try not to use steel chrome rims. These types of rims can cause problems when braking during wet weather. Step 6 Ride slowly when road biking in the snow. If you're not in a race, take your time to get to where you're headed safely. Be sure to pay attention to what you're doing. This is not the time to allow your mind to wander. |
| A bike is a toddler's first real sign of independence. It is similar to when a teenager gets his first car and it's exciting for him and for you. The question, though, is how to pick a bike for a toddler with all of the choices available out there. Just follow these guidelines. Step 1 Consider your toddler's height. Take your toddler to the store with you so that you can properly fit him for his bike. When he sits on the seat both feet should touch the floor.Step 2 Check the age range recommended for the bike. Your child should be in that age range. Bikes come in different sizes for each range so if your child is big or small for his age the bike should accommodate his needs. Step 3 Think about where you will be riding. Bikes come designed for either the road or the trail. Road bikes cannot be ridden safely on a dirt trail. Step 4 Take into consideration your child's maturity level. What type of bike he should ride is going to depend on what he is mentally ready to use. Step 5 Allow your child to pick out the theme of her bike. Toddler bikes come decorated with Barbie, Spiderman and other childhood heroes. Allowing your child to pick her own bike really makes it her own. |
Step 1 Put your saddlebags, called panniers, on the bike. Clip the hooks on the panniers to the top of the rack, with the elastic on the bag's back facing the wheel. The larger panniers hang from the rack over the rear wheel and the smaller ones from the front rack. Step 2 Line each pannier with a garbage bag in case of rain. Step 3 Pack items tightly, filling the garbage bags inside the panniers with camping gear, cooking supplies, spare clothes and tools. Balance the weight so that one side of the bike is not heavier than the other. Step 4 Put on the handlebar bag. It should hang from a clamp that came with the bag, and it attaches to the center of the bike's handlebars. Step 5 Fill the handlebar bag with sunglasses, sunscreen, wallet, snacks and other items that require frequent access. If your bag has a map pocket, slide your folded map into the appropriate section. Step 6 Strap your sleeping bag and tent to the rear rack with bungee cords or nylon straps.
